demos, etc.
by Jonathan A. Berz
It’s been year and a half since I started working on this but life keeps getting in the way. These are some of the better demos I’ve accumulated so far. I recorded most of these with borrowed equipment at various times in various places.
“Brave Iranians” (instrumental demo) (Mike’s mix)
This is the first song I wrote for Songs from the moon. I recorded it in my office in summer 2009 and Mike Frelick mixed it for me. I was listening to lots of Paul McCartney and Brian Eno and watching lots of Clint Eastwood westerns when I wrote this. It has some words but mostly oohs and aahs.
“Phossy Jaw” (demo)
A portion of “Phossy Jaw.” I made it when I made “Brave Iranians.” This one’s going to be instrumental. I wanted to make something that sounded like the music from Deja Vu for Nintendo.
“Melancholic” (demo)
Piano demo of one of the four “humors” instrumentals.
“If I Could I Would Annex Other Planets!” (instrumental demo w/ Danny)
A loop of the primary part of the song recorded on July 3/4 2010 in Shaun Wisniewski’s spare bedroom and in my office. Awesome drumming by Danny Kanka. I played the other stuff.
“Bats in a Bell Tree” by The Cast, the Camera (me: guitar, vocals; Ed Sertage: bass, vocals; Ryan Looney: percussion, vocals) live at Turkeyfest ’05 at the Modern Exchange in Southgate. We’re keeping this one but I’m going to play piano on it underneath a sweet hip-hop beat that Danny came up with. There’s also going to be lots of other stuff going on.
“Retreat the Midwest” by The Cast, the Camera live at Turkeyfest ’05. We’re going to do a different version of this one too.
[synth test]
A test recording at my new place. It may be slightly panic-inducing but is also kind of hypnotic.
